Best Label Maker for Home Use: Choosing the Right DYMO

You've just spent an hour carefully organising your home office files, only to realise the new tape you bought doesn't actually fit your machine. It's a common frustration for many Australians who find themselves caught …

Choose the DYMO LetraTag 100H for everyday home labels without a phone, the LetraTag 200B for mobile-designed labels, the LabelManager 160P for QWERTY entry and D1 tape, or the Organiser Xpress Pro for raised retro lettering without batteries. The right choice starts with how you want to enter the text and which refill material suits the job.

Key points

  • LetraTag 100H suits standalone home labelling with an ABC keyboard and 12mm tape.
  • LetraTag 200B uses the free LetraTag Connect app; it has no keyboard or screen.
  • LabelManager 160P uses a QWERTY keyboard and D1 standard or durable tape up to 12mm.
  • Organiser Xpress Pro makes raised white lettering on 9mm plastic tape without power.
  • D1, LetraTag and plastic embossing tapes are separate families, not interchangeable refills.

Choose a system, not just a machine

A label maker purchase commits you to a refill family. LetraTag 100H and 200B share 12mm LetraTag cassettes. The LabelManager 160P uses D1. The Organiser Xpress Pro takes plastic embossing tape.

Use this guide for the buying decision, then follow Home Organisation Basics with Dymo LetraTag for household projects rather than repeating a room-by-room plan here.

Start with the job you will do most often

For a drawer of craft supplies or a shelf of household storage, start with the way you want to type. The 100H keeps the keyboard and screen in one handheld unit. The 200B moves both jobs to your mobile. These are different workflows, not different refill systems: both take 12mm LetraTag tape.

For home-office files with narrow spine labels, the 160P adds 6mm and 9mm options alongside 12mm. That is a concrete reason to choose D1 rather than assuming a home label maker must be a LetraTag. Its QWERTY keyboard also suits someone who wants computer-style letter placement without connecting a computer.

For a small set of jar names or craft drawers where the raised lettering is part of the look, the Organiser Xpress Pro offers a different finish. It forms one character at a time rather than printing a label from typed text. Choose that workflow deliberately: it suits short names, but every extra letter means another turn and squeeze.

A useful buying order is to decide the refill family, then the text-entry method, then the machine price. If you already have LetraTag cassettes, choosing between the 100H and 200B lets you keep using them. Moving to the 160P means buying D1 instead. None of the three tape families can substitute for another simply because the width looks similar.

1. DYMO LetraTag 100H: suited to everyday labels without a phone

The black LetraTag 100H has an ABC keyboard and a 13-character graphical display. It prints up to two lines at 180 dpi on 12mm LetraTag tape, with five font sizes, seven print styles and nine saved labels.

Choose it when you want to pick up one handheld device, enter a name and print. Its paper, plastic and iron-on refill options cover different household jobs without changing the machine.

Advantages: Standalone text entry, a label preview and saved names for repeat work.

Trade-offs: The ABC layout differs from a computer keyboard. All refills are 12mm wide, and four AA batteries are not included.

The box includes a white paper cassette. Choose the 100H for a phone-free labelling routine. See our LetraTag 100H guide for model-specific operation.

2. DYMO LetraTag 200B: suited to mobile-designed labels

The LetraTag 200B has no built-in keyboard or screen. Type and arrange labels in the free DYMO LetraTag Connect app, then send them over Bluetooth. Its product page lists iOS 13 and later or Android 10.0 and later.

It prints up to two lines at 160 dpi on the same 12mm LetraTag tapes as the 100H. The body measures 120 x 120 x 45mm, with four AA batteries required and a black-on-white paper cassette included.

Advantages: Mobile text entry, on-screen design controls and shared refills with other LetraTag models.

Trade-offs: A compatible mobile or tablet is part of the workflow. Batteries are extra; you cannot type directly on the machine.

Choose the 200B when you prefer your mobile keyboard. Our LetraTag 200B Bluetooth guide covers setup separately.

3. DYMO LabelManager 160P: suited to QWERTY entry and D1 tape

The LabelManager 160P has a computer-style QWERTY keyboard, label-preview LCD and formatting keys. It prints up to two lines, or one line on 6mm tape, with six font sizes and eight text styles.

It accepts D1 standard tape in 6mm, 9mm and 12mm and the 12mm D1 Durable range. Choose it for filing and storage when you want different widths or the option of stronger adhesive for more demanding surfaces.

Advantages: QWERTY entry, three supported widths and standard or durable material choices.

Trade-offs: No Bluetooth or USB connection. Six AAA alkaline batteries or the optional 9V adaptor are extra. The wider D1 family reaches 24mm, but the 160P stops at 12mm.

Choose the 160P when the keyboard and D1 materials are the reasons to buy.

4. DYMO Organiser Xpress Pro: suited to raised retro lettering

The Organiser Xpress Pro presses raised white characters into 9mm coloured plastic tape. Turn the 49-character wheel to each letter and squeeze the handle; the built-in cutter finishes the label with a peel tab.

Its bundle includes three tape cassettes. No batteries, app or computer are needed, making it a distinct option for short jar names, craft storage and drawer labels.

Advantages: Manual operation, three starter tapes and an embossed finish.

Trade-offs: One line per label and individual character entry. It takes plastic embossing tape, not D1, LetraTag or metal strip.

Choose the Organiser Xpress Pro for the lettering style and no-power workflow. Longer names mean more dial-and-squeeze work.

D1 vs LetraTag: materials and refill costs

D1 does not fit LetraTag, and LetraTag does not fit LabelManager. Matching 12mm widths do not make the cassette housings interchangeable. Plastic embossing tape is a third format.

Refill example Fits these picks Pack length Price inc GST
LetraTag white paper twin pack 100H and 200B Two 4m rolls $16.04
LetraTag white, clear or yellow plastic single roll 100H and 200B 4m $13.50
LetraTag white or clear plastic twin pack 100H and 200B Two 4m rolls $25.20
LetraTag white iron-on 18771 100H and 200B 2m $15.30
D1 standard 45013, 12mm black on white LabelManager 160P 7m $28.80
D1 Durable, 12mm black on white 1978364 LabelManager 160P 5.5m $22.00
D1 Durable, white on black, black on orange or white on red LabelManager 160P 3m to 5.5m across the range; varies by colour $16.20
Plastic embossing 1741670, black three-pack Organiser Xpress Pro Three 3m rolls $10.70

LetraTag paper suits folders and short-term indoor identification. Plastic is water-resistant and tear-resistant for containers and storage tubs; clear plastic lets the surface show through. Iron-on is the fabric option and has a shorter roll length.

D1 standard is polyester tape with 7m per cassette. For the 160P, 9mm variants cost $26.90 inc GST, while the listed 6mm and 12mm variants cost $28.80 inc GST. D1 Durable adds stronger adhesive for plastic, metal, powder coat and timber, including slightly textured or curved surfaces.

Compare pack length as well as price: a paper twin pack, a 2m iron-on cassette and a 7m D1 cassette are different quantities. Actual label count depends on the wording and finished length.

App, keyboard or manual dial?

Choose the 200B for mobile design, 100H for an ABC keyboard with LetraTag refills, 160P for QWERTY entry and D1 materials, or Organiser Xpress Pro for individually embossed names.

The 100H lists 180 dpi and the 200B lists 160 dpi, but both use the same LetraTag materials. Pick the material for its destination, not from a resolution number.

FAQ

Which DYMO label maker can I use without a phone?

The LetraTag 100H and LabelManager 160P have their own keyboards and screens. The Organiser Xpress Pro is entirely manual.

Can I move LetraTag tapes from a 100H to a 200B?

Yes. Both use genuine 12mm LetraTag cassettes in paper, plastic and iron-on materials.

Does D1 tape fit the LetraTag 200B?

No. The 200B takes LetraTag tape only. D1 fits the LabelManager 160P instead.

Can the LabelManager 160P use 19mm D1 tape?

No. Its supported widths are 6mm, 9mm and 12mm. The wider D1 range does not change this model's maximum width.

What extra power supplies do I need?

The LetraTag 100H and 200B need four AA batteries each. The 160P needs six AAA alkaline batteries or its optional 9V adaptor. These are extra purchases.

Does the Organiser Xpress Pro need ink or batteries?

No. It forms raised lettering by hand on 9mm plastic embossing tape, with three cassettes included in the bundle.

One last thing

If you already own refills, read the family name on the cassette before choosing another machine. Existing LetraTag tapes move between the 100H and 200B; D1 stays with a compatible LabelManager.

Check the selected tape colour and pack size before placing your order.
